Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is in the Coaching and Mentoring Academy?

A: The Coaching and Mentoring Academy is made up of colleagues who are committed to the development of staff.   Our members are from academia, professional services and research.   From October 2018, the academy will be recruiting coaches and mentors from across the Coventry University Group and therefore will be available to all our staff as a service.

Q: What coaching and mentoring experience do academy members have?

A: All academy members are qualified coach-mentors or are working towards the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Level 7 Leadership Coaching and Mentoring certificate.  An essential component of the CMI programmes is to gain coaching and mentoring practice, both in the workshops and outside with coachees and mentees.

Q: Who is eligible to apply to join the academy and undertake the CMI programme?

A: We welcome applications from across Coventry University Group; from all departments, faculties, schools and research centres.  Staff at all grades may apply.  We encourage members to work together and support each other regardless of grade or experience as this is a learning journey for all.

Q: I’ve recently joined Coventry University Group, but I’d love to be involved.  Am I eligible to join the academy and CMI programme?

A: For new staff, we stipulate that you must have passed your probation period before applying to join the academy and CMI programme.

Q: I haven’t written an academic assignment for a long time, is this an essential part of the CMI programme?

A: The assignment is required by the CMI in order to achieve the certificate.  However, we’ll help you throughout the programme through one to one study support sessions, access to CMI’s Management Direct portal and supporting resources on our Moodle pages.  Each of our workshops are designed to meet the CMI learning outcomes and will each focus on a different aspect of the assignment.

Q: What are you looking for in new academy members?

A: We’re looking for people who are passionate about developing and supporting our staff.  It’s also important to have a good degree of self-awareness and be open to giving and receiving feedback.  You may also wish to consider receiving coaching yourself as this can be one of the most helpful ways to learn how to be a coach.

Q: What is the expected commitment of a coach/mentor after completing the CMI certificate?

Post completion of the CMI programme our academy members must be able to commit to the following hours during an academic year:

  • 36 coaching and mentoring hours per year
  • 8 hours of group supervision per year
  • 7 hours of CPD per year

Total commitment: 51 hours per calendar year.

Please note this is subject to change as the academy develops.

Q: How do I apply?

A: Applications for 2018/2019 are now closed. Information about future cohorts will be posted here in due course.

We offer drop-in and information sessions at the beginning of each academic year. You can also email to arrange a confidential conversation with a member our team.
